4.1 Module Presentation

1.1. Learning objectives of the module:

This module provides an introduction to student engagement and participation as part of LSP teaching. It offers an overview of how to engage and motivate students in online and blended classrooms. In addition, you will be invited to explore the impact of culture. You will be introduced to some digital tools and activities that promote student engagement and participation.

This module offers hands-on experience in trying out digital tools and creating teaching material, in addition to reflecting on your own development and goals.

At the end of this module, you will

• be familiar with and able to apply the Gilly Salmon’s 5 Stage Model to enhance student engagement and participation ( CCF 1.3: Knowledge of andragogy; CCF 1.4 Knowledge of the affective domain in language learning )
• be familiar with the type of activities and tools that enhance  student engagement and participation (CCF 1.2 Expertise in CALL methodology, CCF 2.1 Transversal and interpersonal skills)
• be able to practice, share and reflect on using these tools (CCF 1.2 Expertise in CALL methodology)
• be able to integrate student engagement activities in a lesson plan (CCF 4.1 Know-how of course design)
• be able to reflect on the role of culture in student participation (CCF 2.2 Intercultural communication competence).

1.2. Activities to complete in order to validate the module (three levels of engagement)

There are three possible levels of engagement in the course, and therefore three different validation levels with specific requirements:

• Level 1 – “Browser level”: you want to view and read the course materials to gain an insight into LSP pedagogy. Your objective is to go through the materials each week without doing the quizzes or more complex assignments. Although you are welcome to participate in this way, be aware that you will not be awarded any badge or certificate if you choose this option.
• Level 2 – “Tester level”: you want to view and read the course materials, but also to take all the quizzes in the module and write a few posts to gain badges. You will need to score 50% or above to be awarded the badges associated to quizzes.
• Level 3 – “Creator level”: you want to view and read the course materials, to take all the quizzes in the module, to interact with other course participants (posts) and to complete the final assignment of this module to be awarded a Certificate.
